Superhero Gone Dark

It won’t take long
to remove the broken,
clean the streets
and fill the sidewalks
with carefree shoppers.
We can go about our business
dressed for joy, overlooking
the monsters in Italian suits,
shoes perfect for brushing
the unwanted to the curb.
Down in the sewers
a masked man toils,
superhero gone dark.
He drinks from broken pipes,
gathering rats under his flowing cape
to strike the thieves eating pigs and cattle.
Barnyards erupt with cries for freedom
and along the rain filled gutters
the unwashed flash the sign for Batman.

  1. Tom Figel says:

Don, wow, a lot of your New York came out in this one. And the Italian suits, the (saddle) shoes, such a description of some familiar barristers. I see that Lou M. is back from his sabbatical. Welcome.

  2. Keith says:

It’s like a full length movie in 19 lines.
I think I see all these characters inside me.
A good way to start my Sunday.

  3. Mike McCauley says:

We Barristers prefer Brooks Brothers to Italian suits. And no saddle shoes for us! Only wingtips from Allen Edmonds. Think of us as “Batman for the Unwashed.” With a 1/3 Contingency Fee.

  4. David Banner says:

    Don…very evoccative!

  5. Edward Haimes says:

I am not surprised that this theme arises. Dystopia is very much alive. Orwellian images abound. I should stop here lest I be accused of being “Political.” Thank you Don, there is need for much pushback with great risk as well.

  6. Hugh says:

Despite the degradation: in full light of day, something wonderful is going to happen….

We do see what has been presented in full display.
Yet a full heart coming closer to our true nature beats with all her knowing.
