The dark tide
surges shoreward,
cresting white
on crags of stone
in night’s cold embrace.
Stirred by the sea,
my heart swells
with the throbbing pulse—
an ancient song
of belonging.
We never left the sea.
How could we?
We only learned to breathe
on these green islands
and rose to share Her beauty.

  2. Don — Beautiful! Spring is now springing up all over in Milwaukee. Our beautiful Earth is coming alive again! This is why we can never stop “learning to breathe.” Mike

  3. Amazing, beautiful and so touching — perfect ode to the Mother today. I love the rise to learn to breathe in the green amongst Her beauty. It lifts my heart and spirits.

  4. Don, I think you are masking your New York boyhood and the experience of those garbage-bearing tides reaching toward your borough. None of that in this testament to the Pacific environment.

  5. When I was 6 years old and my mother was teaching me piano, she would frequently remind me to breathe while I played. I am still learning to breathe! Thanks for the reminder, Don.

  6. Very true about never leaving the sea – the salinity of the blood circulating in our bodies is a physical reminder of our ocean heritage!
