Drunk on starlight
I stumble in the temple,
my voice loud in praise
of Aldebaran and Sirius.

I doubt I will ever be sober,
the Almighty so biased
toward the unabashed.

Desire guides me
on the luminous track,
lured by darkness
to the distant light

where sky gods celebrate
those who love night glory,
who dare once more
to sing among the stars.

  1. Don, the photo from Kevin Daly is a lovely complement to today’s poem. I do notice that, perhaps from reflection on some times you and Kevin had together, sobriety becomes a subject in the poem. Thanks for what you sent today.

  2. Every true temple — one made of mineral stone or of human bone — is created then sustained by luminous desire. And amid such brightness, no shadows of darkness exist. Hence, All is Light — And It shows! (So does Yours, Don!)

  3. I love this drunk on the passion of praise poem. We have Rumi,

“I could break out of this prison for drunks.
I didn’t come here of my own accord, and I can’t leave that way.
Whoever brought me here, will have to take me home.”

But there is plenty of room for the singing of ecstatic poems. I think world needs more!
