Broken and bent
I enter the gray morning,
the earth sore and melancholy
by dreams dashed
on the barren shores
of mediocrity.

The surface of the sea
breaks in waves
yet down below
the waters are calm,
where turtles swim
without haste.

I drop into this depth
and I too am carried
by the silence of the deep,
the waters beneath the wave.

  1. I understand that hatchlings know the way directly to their home waters without instruction or guidance. When Spirit awakened in me, I went straight to 100 Mile Lodge, my mind, amazingly, having trusted my heart. No tossing of coins. No consultation, no inducement…..just one Human “Doing” his garden, and simply setting down his hoe, yielding into Being. Our bond of friendship abides in deep waters. Thank you, Don.

  2. I imagine we all feel “broken and bent” after a harsh winter yet the ease of so-called mindless creatures tells us that another way is possible…..

  3. Don-

Your lovely poem stands along side Wendell Berry’s “The Peace of Wild Things.” In our times, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sanga of the human world are for me eclipsed by my eternal belonging to and refuge in the natural world.

  4. Thank you, Don, for this beautiful poem…so beautiful for its simplicity and grace and poignancy. I can feel Turtle Island as a whole responding to this poem as the Trump era begins to awaken a longing for a depth in our common roots below the waves on the surface and into the ocean of Being.
