Dawn on a steel gray sea,
the rain-cleansed earth breathes;
ancient trees and freshened grass
share the hallowed space.

Quietly I sweep the inner temple
where dust gathered
and ill feelings linger;
the injuries of violence
repaired with silence.

Windows open to the sea
and early light;
bells of awareness softly chime
with thanksgiving.

  1. Beautiful. I note and enjoy the rhyme breathes and trees. Those add a lot to reading pleasure.
    Not sure you need the adverb “quietly.” The poem begins quiet and sustains that tone, so we don’t need to be told.
    I like how it turns out to be a seasonal Thanksgiving poem, too. A soft dismount 😇

  2. Thanks for sweeping my inner temple with this beautiful poem
    Don! Have a wonderful day.

  3. Yes Indeed, Temple Keeper Don! The soft light of thankful awareness, when held early, heals any injury from violence that is left sorely in need of repair. Therein and ongoing afterward, the sacred silence of Oneness can and will ring true in the freshened heart. Of That, I am soundly assured!

  4. Don — The ringing of the three bells reminds me of the Seokjeon Ceremony in South Korea in 1971. I was teaching English as a Peace Corps Volunteer at Sung Gyun Gwan Confucian University in Seoul. Twice a year, they would have a Seokjeon to honor the birthday of Confucius in the Fall & his death in the Spring.

    “Bells of awareness softly chime with thanksgiving.” Your poem is beautiful.

  5. Slowly and in our Lord’s time the Angel moves in premeditation toward her own knowing of giving all this life soundly back to the gentleness of LOVE.

  6. Two others have quoted my favorite line in this thoughtful and beautiful “poem: “bells of awareness softly chime with thanksgiving”. Thank you, Don, for this gem among your many jewels!
