In early morning
I sit alone with the sea.
Only stillness,
dawn color
and the wind’s whisper
in the high trees.

As the day rises
I calm the thoughts
that come with wakefulness.
To empty the vessel
is to invite the guest.

No words are needed
for presence is all
and with light in the east
I am lifted.

  1. Don, your poem captures all the stillness and majesty of a dawn. It’s great. One caution, though. Your lawyer acquaintances are east of you: what we take for sunrise could just be the glow of whatever they’ve set on fire in their normal conduct of business.

  2. This is the work, I’m convinced. Make room for the Guest, let the silence be holy silence, and let ourselves be lifted. With you in that work, Brother.

  3. Don, I’ll join you in this space anytime. It’s in this space that being alone is transformed into a connection with the Divine and therefore one another.
Love this. Felt like it came through you with one stroke of the pen. (I’d use pencil to edit but this feels like perfection with no need for edits. Love to you my friend. Keith

  4. I felt companionship this early morn with a luscious moon facing the east in perfect union with the silent Will.
With two or more gathered we pray in our agreement.
    Nothing is left out.
    Blessings all

  5. Thank you. for this lovely invitation to stillness, simple presence, the mind quiet….

  6. I am drawn to all your poetry, Don. This one I felt compelled to return to for the sublime notion that the empty vessel invites the guest into a quiet sacred space. Thank you.
