If I awoke before light,
before bird call
and waves beating,
so early there was only you and me,
the only two awake
in the whole wide world;
while islands slept
and we watched the sun
break into the sky
with the radiance of a star.
Then we would know our place
in the arms of the earth
all of it open
unmarked and ancient.
That would be the morning.
Thank you, Don, for this little gem of a poem. This takes Kipling’s famous “If” to a new level. It is no longer about being or becoming a man as much as all of us awakening to the new day dawning, each human seeing the divinity all around, within and between us all.
My friend,
I love the feeling of this poem. It truly goes beyond the words, the cadence, and even the over all theme. The feeling takes me to that ancient place. I’ve been getting up way before dawn and in that darkness the light emerges for me with great caring and love that touches that ancient place you speak for.
Echos of your poem in Eckhart Tolle’s statement that “enlightenment is simply your feeling sense of your oneness with everything.” And the belonging your poem beautifully unfolds.
One of those exactly right poems…every image in place. Timeless.
Exactly how Uncle Ron and I greeted each other just the other Morning.
Exactly so.
reminds me of how it is to sleep under the stars and wake at first light
I love the feel of this poem Don. Thanks so much.
goosebumps…
All of it open and unmarked….beautifullllllll
Gorgeous poem……unfolds and unfolds,
“all of it open
unmarked and ancient,”
Kindles us right into that light!
Bravo!
Thanks Don,
You I know of an omnipresent Diety who enfolds all creation, awake or still asleep. When we awake, we are thankful for this understanding and we get a chance in the silence to seen beauty, before it is besmirched by egos who know nothing about our purpose on Earth.
It is a delight in early hours of Australia when the Angelos (Greek for messenger) has informed on his behalf to renew our chance for purpose in this vast world of ours as we are part of his.
Rejoice!
Ascension… Love this poem Don…
Yes…
As pristine and perfect as a rain drop – yet connected to everything else. Masterful story telling.
Oh for such a morning when we know our place in the arms of the world.
Tapped into such a longing, then flickers of felt knowing began to tickle in my skin.
So many thank yous Don.
As I’ve mentioned before, first light across the sea is by far my most favorite time of day. I’ll send you a photo from my deck down under.
They get better and better Dandy Don!
