With open heart
morning floods in,
smoke filled,
alive with birds.

Some ragged memory
with a broken muffler
pulls to the curb
but I wave it off.
What could be
more important
than inner peace?

Find your way
to the soul altar
and speak your truth.
What you need is there,
waiting, full of grace.

  3. Just like Fiegs noted – “ragged memory with a broken muffler” I think there is a country song hiding inside this verse.

Your smoke-filled morning is something most of us in the West deal with every day as our forest lands burn.

  4. Thanks Don – for the reminder that still small place inside that finds solace among the chaos, refusing to let fear make decisions for me.

  5. Stunningly beautiful, and full of simple grace. A big deep sigh is released–more grace. Thank you, Don.

  6. The only way we have anything to offer into the world is by maintaining our own inner peace. Thank you for your beautiful expression through this poem.
