Deeper we must go
through the hard crust
of all we remember,
below the waves
disturbed and roiling,

where desire softens,
breath steadies,
who we are
and yet becoming
open to the quiet
aloneness of life,

beyond prayer,
beyond belief,
following once more
the unmarked way.

  1. Spot on, Don, for the choices I continue making right now. Especially on this Mother’s Day when hard crusts and roiling waves demand my attention. “No”, I say, just plain, honest, clear “No”. I go deeper so get out of the way. I’ve got a life below the surface demands of memories. I’ve got a way that old fashioned road maps of expectation cannot address. Love this evolutionary process of becoming.

  2. Deep thanks to you, Don. There’s chosen “aloneness” I call solitude. Then, there’s Involuntary aloneness….,

  3. I didn’t realize that I’ve been holding my breath for awhile until I read this poem. It is easier to breathe, even in the underwater recesses of this life. I continue to dive deeper, but now have a source of air in this poetry.

  4. The hard crust of harsh emotions are forgiven with easier breathe, diving deeper, we get below the storm clouds we are refreshed in the clear breeze.

  5. So sweet and true. Goes hand in hand with the essence of Graceful Warrior I…. May I use it in the training and give you credit? Thanks for your eye for beauty…. as always.

  6. I remember how the exhortation to stillness used to … rile something inside me somehow … like the black-cloked-neutered priests would rile me with their sugar-sweet incantations to nowhere. All I can say is … I must be getting older … 😀

  7. Perfect! Save this one for the next book. I love reading it and letting it soak in, deeper and deeper……….

  8. This is what’s up: the call to go deeper. You have a way with the words of the heart, Don. The heart of hearts. Bless you.

  9. Down through the shadow into the soft underbelly…….you dance this dance of poesy so well, Don…….
