Digging through the underbrush
he cut his way through thorns
to the clean swath of river.
Guarded by boulders
and shear stone walls,
the blue green water
flowed protected and fast.

Belly down on the gravel beach,
he drank from the river,
his thirst of many miles
defeating all ceremony.
In the far distance
he heard Grandfather’s calling,
the sound of Grandmother’s rattle.
He had come so far to see them,
to sit in their cornmeal circle
and know again the truth of his spirit.

A cool wind blew down the canyon
refreshing his washed face,
causing him to look up
to the distance he had yet to go.
All doubt was gone
for he could hear them calling
and picking up his pack he set off,
ready to vault any barrier
for the campground of his ancient home.

  1. It is a fine way of speaking Don, telling this Story of our journey Home, back to that place which in our heart-of-hearts we never really left—it is with us always as a central shrine. This place is holy.

  2. I relate deeply to the poignant ache of a traveler knowing his journey is nearly over, the determination to finish, and the deep satisfaction of knowing that his ancestors are waiting for him.

    Thank you.

  3. Honoring ancestors with our own life defines the continuity so necessary in these days. Cycles of life, of living repeated throughout time, carry the power of Spirit that anchors reality and gives strength to continue the journey. It is good to pause, refresh, and seek guidance through the barriers, the boulders of what lies ahead.
    Thank you.

  4. This is a wonderful, real time, present experience! Matches my morning! Thanks Don! Namaste!

  5. Thorns, boulders and many miles, all add up to the perfect journey……….thank God for the call of the ancient ones letting us know that we will gather once more to praise!

  6. Yes, my friend, your power of image, rhythm and song brings us to that place we are all moving toward as we release the old patterns and hear the call of healing and joy within us.

  7. Compelling & evocative, Don—vivid imagery enlivened by voice & music. Thank you for your ongoing trailblazing voice, continually shining forward, inviting an increase of light, bringing harmony home.
