Rope of Stillness

I sit quite still
becoming like the trees
in deep-rooted silence.
Mountains rest beside the sea,
the tide moving slowly
in the first hours of ebb.
There is an old song
in the hushed music of the earth
of ancient stone, rustling leaves
and the daylit dreaming of the forest.
I climb the vine covered walls
using stillness as a braided rope
and drop like a cat
into the garden of the eternal.

Every quiet word, every syllable, each line, evoke this stillness. I feel this fine quiet state vividly as I read. This is magic! Brilliant mood, and perfect landing. Poof! Here we are, right where we belong.
    With gratitude…

Don — Love this poem & your reading of it. Your pace is perfect & lowering your voice on “drop” in the 2nd last line was inspired. I’m sitting here gazing out onto the Atlantic Ocean on a bright Sunday morning at Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Our children are coming in this afternoon from Chicago for a week’s stay with us. I have dropped like a cat into the eternal. Thanks for sharing this with us.

This is gorgeous, Don. Thank you. Maybe it’s just my imagination that it’s new, but I’m hearing a different dimension in your recent work — more magic and wonder, perhaps, more spiritual buoyancy after a hard winter of enduring.
Regardless of my imagination, this is an exquisite poem. Thank you.
