“We are masters of the universe”
the cartoon heroes declare,
“fighting for truth and justice.”
Rabbits don’t seem impressed
as they nibble away
on the rain soaked grass.
Outside the hall of mirrors
I watch with the tide
and wait upon the wind.

Quietly my friend,
let’s pick our way
on the stone littered path
to the great hall of silence;
no chanting, no speeches,
only the reverberation
of the bell without sound
beckoning us back to life.

Reading of “Bell Without Sound” with music by Bagno Armonico

  1. Lovely poem. Reminiscent Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” The inner reverberation of stillness in the core of our beings.

    Thank you very much.

  2. Don, the image of the indifferent rabbits is clever, as is the entire poem. The poem also leaves me regretful that some of our lawyer acquaintances were not that kind of bell.

  3. Don — Reading your warmly penned “Bell Without Sound”, I am reminded of Rumi’s o-so-familiar invitation, “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.”

Plus, I (rabbit-like) have, safely at hand, my choir of tibetan bowls, replete with sonorousness, yet absent any clappers (like alas, the brittle, cracked Liberty Bell of olde) — No clappers nearby! Thank Heaven — and You!

  4. Don — Greetings from one of your “lawyer acquaintances.” I can assure you that I can be a “Bell Without Sound.” Now that I am retired & no longer required to bill by the hour for being a “Bell With Lots of Noise.” Seriously, the older I get, the more I appreciate moments of quiet contemplation surrounded by the beauty of nature. Thanks for this wonderful poem.
