With elegant wings
heron carves the air
above the tide.
No combat or struggle,
just thin bone and muscle
leaving the image
of a perfect feather
drawn upon the sea.

Gorgeous moment in time, Don. I thank you.
Don, my own theory about great poets is that each produces at most six significant works. At poem 703, you are exceeding quota.
They are such elegant, graceful creatures…
Beautiful poetry, thanks Don!
This one is kinda Japanese, Don. I think if you removed a few words here and there, it would take on even more of an Oriental flavor, no?
What do I know?
I often walk around City Park Lake in the Old Town West section of my home here in Fort Collins, Colorado. During the warmer months, a solitary blue heron is a consistent resident. Sometimes I come across him standing near the lake’s edge, tall, reed-slender, statuesque. If I pause a moment, soon he will launch into magnificent flight with his mighty wing span, leaving me breathless.
I too love the presence in my world of the Great Blue Heron. Watching this wonderous bird wading in the Big Thompson River, silent and still, speaking to me of ancient times, timeless beauty revealed in now time. I love birds. Thank you, Don, for this everlasting memory.
Here where I work, I look out over vast marshlands to encounter slim blue-grey heron gliding over head and down to glassy waters–perfect poetry on the wing and in your words Don—thank you
