Just this morning,
with the sky full of rain,
I turn to the edge of light
in the far distance.

Cranky as a crow
I open like a spring bulb,
and go where I have not gone
for many years –
to the rim of a canyon,
the edge of a waterfall,

where the earth sings out
in the sweet-toned melody
of the stranger
I once knew as joy.

  1. Yes, brother, JOY, the great antidote for our mind and heart. Opening like the flower singing to us through the song of the earth. Thank you.

  2. I love this poem dad. Joy can get very elusive as time and the trials of “adulting” go by, it really is just like that one bulb that comes up through all that dark dirt just to say yes. 🌷

  3. Beautiful You Ol Cranky Crow !!! I Just Say . . . Yes Yes & Yes Yes & Yes ~ ~ Love It When You & Daughter Eilish Get Together ~ I Thank You Both ~ Blessings 🌸🌸🌸

  4. Love this. Can feel that warm fire in the lush spring air—bringing loamy life into being!! Thank you Don and Eilish💕

  5. Let’s just do it, Don! You and me, and the chorus of fellows around us. Let’s just do it…

  6. Essential to keep a place at the family table for joy, I say. Even when the seat stays empty, it’s there for a visitation. Elijah and Joy can sit in it together — they take up so little room. They both are part of the wild beauty that can never be extinguished.

  7. Exquisite……Joy, rising up through the river of life where our voice and feeling, where our creation together resides……May we spill over into this precious earth a Blessing……..Thank you, Don

PS I know you’re not really cranky.

  8. Going to the edge is familiar as I am there now. Choosing not to listen to the noise of other voices saying, “Do this” and “No, do this”, I sit quietly listening only to the sweet toned melody of my own. And I tell joy to stop being a stranger and become my friend and companion. It is time.

  9. Exquisite complement, Don – the painting and the poem. The edge of light, the edge of a waterfall: take me to the edge, where a soundless Sound and a breathless Hush fills the great deep with joy and awe.

  10. Joy is where you have not gone in many years? Oh!

“I turn to the edge of light in the soft distance” – beautiful. i am going to memorize that. Why? Because I want the call to the edge to be soft. I want my edge to beckon me like a guardian angel, beckoning me with love to experience a larger existence. Yes, I’m ready, with fear and knowing.

Eilish’s paintings are exquisite. So glad you are using them with your poetry.

  11. We have similar experiences or are they the same.
I too was cranky as a crow recently …when ….the door to Heaven opened wide and I heard a voice.
“Behold I bring you tidings of great joy ! ”
I bathed in this for many hours which was more than wonderful but mostly I was relieved that it was still so.
