I’m huddled in my cave,
a stick fire kindled
with a flickered flame
lighting the cragged walls.

Outside the winter sky
blue black and full of stars,
layers of snow upon the earth,
ice covering the sleeping trees.

There is much to consider
before I cross the river,
thought and feeling like sap
waiting in the hidden root.

I hold your memory
beneath the blanket
of all that’s passed and gone.
I look out but stay within;
there is much to heal
and still I need darkness.

  1. Oh yes, this has been my February thoughts for years and years.
Takes me so long to get into the dark, into that inner engagement, that the returning sun comes nearly two months too early, every year.

  2. I loved that phrase “beneath the blanket of that has passed and gone.” It reminded me of a poem I wrote a few days ago of the shadow.

    Moil in rocky soil

These thoughts seem to touch the same wave length.

Thanks for the depth and beauty of your expression.

  7. Indeed – I often resist it, but in this moment I embrace the darkness and let the healing occur! Thanks for the reminder….

  8. This is such a jewel Don, and such an encouragement to these long dark wet somber days. You speak such beautiful truth.
