October sun, bright on the water,
turning to autumn.
The distant mountains bare of snow,
the sea windless and calm.
Slowly, I turn as well,
slipping into the dark well of being,
ready to find myself once more
in the cold dread of black dirt and root.

Don – Thank you for this beautiful poem. We’re enjoying an extended, glorious “Indian Summer” here in Milwaukee. I’m reveling in every moment of it, knowing that I will soon “find myself once more in the cold dread of black dirt and root.”
Don, you young poets and your anticipation of the last days! Wait till you’re an octogenarian like some others of us. As for Mike Mc., I think his own cold dread of black dirt and root” is a reflection on the state of his college dorm room.
