One Day

One day
the peace of the earth
will fill my body.
I will know the river,
the roaring of the sea
and a calm green glade
where ferns wave softly
beneath towering cedars.
I will be the earth
and all her inheritance
from aeons past
through dim lit future
yet with gentle rain
falling in the valley
she tells me sweetly
that one day is now.

  1. David Barnes says:

So sweet and tender and strong and true – and it speaks of knowing heaven on earth here and now. I love the word inheritance. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. No take it; not seize it; not steal it; not purchase it – but inherit the earth. Freely given as an inheritance and freely received, in trust. Such is the nature of Love. Thank you Don for this gem.

  2. Ravenstalk says:

    ~ Yes… Accept our inheritance… Our legacy… We belong here ~ ~ Thank You Don ~

  3. Rose Meeker says:

Through all the noise, I hear her too.

  4. Jude says:

    Yes, now too.

  5. Betty Doerr says:

Ferns waving all around us, every greening bowing to the wind.

  6. Elizabeth O Nunn says:

And out of left field comes this…I’ve been collecting dinosaur bones…cut thin and polished…to send to grandkids and to keep. I think often of “all her inheritance from aeons past” as I know and learn to love the Earth around me and as I learn to love myself. We two are one and it is now.

  7. I declare it to be so, Don!

  8. James says:

Well thank God we don’t have to linger around waiting for some future event. APOCALPSE NOW !

  9. Pat Fitzsimmons says:

Just perfect Don! You have particularly honored the spirit of Mary Oliver with this poem. Thank you!

  10. James says:

Apocalypse ! Oh well it’s not my first language 🙂
