Path to the Sun

What grows to the light
will not be deterred
by the buried emotion
of history’s trauma,
the path to the sun
having roots deep set
in the dark soil of heredity,
the minerals of forgotten pain
drawn up to the open sky
by an unwavering faith
in the unwritten future.

Gifted father, talented daughter… why am I not surprised?

  2. Tom Figel says:

Don, a fine match with your daughter’s painting. Of course, as is proper, you are eclipsed here.

  3. Elizabeth Nunn says:

…will not be deterred, unwavering faith in the unwritten future…
That’s what it takes on the path to the sun and so to shine on the path.

  4. David Kyle says:

The arc and rhythm of your poems get stronger and stronger. We were at a local Irish Ceili last night with Irish songs, harp, poetry of Yates and others. Thought of you my friend and all you in your bones bring to the world.
    Thank you.

  5. Paul Blythe says:

“Unwavering faith” appears in a bee hive, as they change what they are doing many minutes, seemingly long before the actual heat of a hot day, thus saving the hive from “melt-down.”

  6. Love those last two lines, Don, just returned from India where we were meeting the dark soil of heredity of consciousness to allow its transformation. Powerful image you and Eilish have captured.

  7. Bill Gordon says:

Beautiful. Very hopeful words at the core – “by an unwavering faith in the unwritten future”

  8. Chaz says:

This could not be more relevant, nor appreciated right now, Don, as my brother lies in a hospital bed recovering from an apparent suicide attempt… Thank you for your guiding wisdom! And you, Eilish, for the stunning piece accompanying!

  9. Helena says:

Both lovely. Thoughtful dad & daughter…

  10. Pichay says:

    Thank you, Don.

I love this image…reminds me of how grass grows right through concrete….life’s indominable will…….

  12. Tom Starrs says:

Love Eilish’s painting. That said, did you birth the poem with her artwork as inspiration and/or focus? Or vv? Both blend wonderfully well. Thank you, Don.
